With Covid looming in the wings like a bully with a high-powered hose, nothing could dowse the flames of enthusiasm that were ignited by yet another one of our long running peer support camps out at El Rancho. Photos here.

Space for planet earth
Over the 2021-2022 Christmas/New Years period, Jayden Kah, John Zhang, Anush Goel, Joshua Taefu, Jihye Moon and Nitya Chatla participated in the Space for Planet Earth competition, ideating and creating an original product using satellite technologies to combat climate change, specifically monitoring coral health. Communicating with industry experts and potential customers, their team innovated a piece of software, winning the NZ & Pacific Island High School competition.
The competition was hosted by SpaceBase in Christchurch, and the team should have been flown down to Christchurch to present their product and receive their award, but due to COVID restrictions, the in-person presentation was cancelled. Thus, the team went to the American Embassy here in Wellington, and were presented their award by the American Ambassador.
The final prize was $10,000 NZD cash, MARS (Mars-Moon Astronautics Academy & Research Sciences) Virtual Academy Scholarship each, "Planet" Data vouchers - equivalent value $15,000 NZD.
