Debating
Kerwin Maass, Anush Goel and Heena Sharma won the Lions' Club Annual Debate at Onslow College. First Speaker, Heena Sharma, also won Best Speaker. Greg O'Connor MP and members of the Wellington Speaking Union presented the team with the coveted trophy. The team negated the moot: This House opposes the promotion and marketing of indigenous cultures by governments for the purpose of tourism.
Kapa haka
Te Ropu Kapa Haka o Te Ao Marama performed at the St Brigids kapa haka festival held at Onslow College. After many months without the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, the team was excited to be back on the kapa haka stage doing what they love!! This performance has us excited for our 2023 regionals campaign!

Ki-o-rahi
Newlands College's ki-o-rahi team attended the College Sport Wellington Secondary School Regional competition held in Term 3. After only training for 4 weeks the team was excited and eager to give the competition their best shot. The weather on the day was typical of Wellington but the team set out in their first game to try their best and ended with a convincing win over Tawa College 35-23. The second game against Onslow College was also a win. Following the first two games, the tournament had to be canceled due to the weather which put the team at the top of the table for our pool with two wins. For the first time, Newlands College will be heading to the ki-o-rahi national secondary schools competition in 2023 in Rotorua. The team would like to thank our supporters, whānau, Pita, Vanessa and Matua Kealyn.
1st XV
Our 1st XV enjoyed a successful season, making the semi-finals of Premier 3 and the Co-Ed Cup. They also won back the Fairplay Cup in our traditional fixture with Onslow College. Pictured below is 1st XV captain, Ngahau Tepaa holding the Fairplay Cup.
Senior boys basketball - amazing drama!
Newlands Senior boys basketball were playing Francis Douglas Memorial College at the Central Cup BBNZ Tournament.
"Newlands were losing 62-60 with 2 seconds left. Coach Clayton Tapp calls a timeout and draws up a winning play. Kiefer Salasiban inbounds the ball to Jadon Chu who makes the clutch three-pointer as time expires. Newlands win 63-60!"
We ended up coming 5th at the tournament out of 15 teams.

RAFTING
After a cancellation due to bad weather in term two, our level three Physical Education students were finally able to make it out for a trip down Te Awa Kairangi with Wellington Rafting. Wrapped up in double layers of wetsuit and lifejackets, the students were able to navigate 10kms of white water rapids, jump off rocks, swim in the awa and even were treated to a chocolate fish and hot chocolate half way down! It was an experience we all loved and look forward to returning in future years.
Variety Show
Variety Show returned after two years much to the excitement of Newlands College students! Held in the evening of 24th of September to a full hall of students and parents and friends, performances included self written songs, vocal covers, contemporary, hip hop, jazz, bollywood, kpop dance groups, and bands. While the feeling of being on stage and the supportive cheers really stuck with me, my highlight was definitely the stirring, youthful teachers' performances. Nothing like seeing your maths teacher act out a chicken cuckooing during a stand up comedy skit. Shoutout to everyone who organised and attended, making the electrifying night possible.
